I was impressed that Broken Eagle managed to handle the ground when winning the Conditions race at Cottenham on Sunday.
We always thought he was a quick ground horse but this gives us a lot more options. He jumped really well and quickened off a good gallop. He looks a proper horse and I couldn’t have been happier with him.
It was a fast time compared to subsequent races, but with conditions deteriorating throughout the afternoon, it possibly flatters him.
I think he’s improved mentally as I could drop him in and get a lead. We didn’t have to make the running and seems more sensible. The plan now is to go to Higham in a few weeks.
Consigliere was disappointing. He finished second to an improving horse called Now Ben in the Open but didn’t give me the same feel as he did when winning there in November.
He never jumped or travelled and has come back with a bit of soreness on his back. We think that might be something to do with why he underperformed.
He felt like he ran about 20lbs below his mark and this was outlined by the fact we finished 25 lengths ahead of Brunswick Gold last time but only 5 lengths in front of him this time. Hopefully we can get him back on his A-game for the next Cottenham. When he’s at his best, he can jump horses into the ground.
Cara Carlotta ran for Lucy in the 3m Maiden and was going nicely until making a bad mistake at the first in the back straight. She went right down on her nose and it cost her all chance. Overall, we’re really happy with her though and she’ll appreciate better ground later in the season.
